Then zinc-carbon battery set limits to your construction which can easily be circumvented with state of the art laser technology. VOERE developed as first company world wide a hunting rifle firing caseless ammunition with electrical ignition in One key element in this construction was the ignition of the cartridge via semiconductor. The trick was to reduce the size of a laser, strong enough to cut metall, from the size of a shoe box to the size of a finger.

Market demands for lower fueling costs and higher specific powers in stationary natural gas engines has engine designs trending towards higher in-cylinder pressures and leaner combustion operation. However, Ignition remains as the main limiting factor in achieving further performance improvements in these engines. Addressing this concern, while incorporating various recent advances in optics and laser technologies, laser igniters were designed and developed through numerous iterations. Final designs incorporated water-cooled, passively Q-switched, Nd:YAG micro-lasers that were optimized for stable operation under harsh engine conditions. Subsequently, the micro-lasers were installed in the individual cylinders of a lean-burn, kW, inline 6-cylinder, open-chamber, spark ignited engine and tests were conducted.
The system will provide ignition to multiple thrusters enabling accurate sequencing of RCS engine clusters. A single laser firing unit will deliver laser light through optical fibers to laser ignition assemblies mounted in multiple RCS thrusters. Laser ignition assemblies will be designed for use in torch type igniters and resonator cavities. The latter type of igniter can potentially eliminate the requirement for valves dedicated to igniter propellant control, instead relying on propellants from the main thruster valves.
