Because many scientists of The Industrial Revolution strongly believed that fossil fuels such as coal would eventually run out, some of them looked for different ways to generate energy. Thus, dating far back to the early s, power generation through the photoelectric and photovoltaic effects were discovered. Solar energy is generated by solar panels, which are composed of individual solar cells or photovoltaic cells that absorb light from the sun - the light absorbed is then turned into electricity. The absorption of light can be attributed to two processes, one being the photoelectric effect, and the other the photovoltaic effect.

Please join StudyMode to read the full document. The photoelectric effect is when a clean metal surface emits electrons after light, especially ultraviolet, has been shone on at it. This happens because of a process called photoelectric emission whereby a single photon package of electromagnetic energy, called a quantum, is absorbed by metal surfaces. This energy is then transferred to one single electron which can then be released by the metal and that released electron is known as a photoelectron. The effect was first absorbed by German physicist Heinrich Hertz in and another discovery he discovered said that metal surfaces where also more likely to emit sparks if they had also been illuminated.
