Change management sometimes abbreviated as CM is a collective term for all approaches to prepare, support, and help individuals , teams , and organizations in making organizational change. Drivers of change may include the ongoing evolution of technology, internal reviews of processes, crisis response, customer demand changes, competitive pressure, acquisitions and mergers , and organizational restructuring. It deals with many different disciplines, from behavioral and social sciences to information technology and business solutions. This article provides an example of how a simple tool, the 5 Whys , was used to unearth an assumption embedded in a business process. Once the assumption was revealed and tested with data, impressive results ensued. The 5 Whys is an iterative question-asking technique to identify the root cause underlying a particular symptom. Consider a situation in which a child throws a tantrum and refuses to go to school. Table 1 shows the application of the 5 Whys to this situation. The root cause, however, is how a parent manages themselves during the power struggle.
